National Lao-American Artist Heritage Month 2015!
We recently received the Governor of Minnesota's proclamation for national Lao-American Artist Heritage Month, an occasion with which we observe the contribution of Lao-American artists to our cultural fabric within our community and well beyond.
This year, Governor Dayton's office made note of the 40th anniversary of our diaspora and events such as the recent National Lao American Symposium and Writers Summit, the Legacies of War: Refugee Nation Twin Cities interdisciplinary exhibit and the SatJaDham Lao literary project which is now recognizing 20 years since its founders first came together in 1995.
Minnesota has been home to nationally-recognized artists and entrepreneurs such as Mali Kouanchao, Bounxou Chanthraphone, Saymoukda Vongsay, myself, and many others. I look forward to the continued creative output of our community.
I hope this recognition serves to encourage and inspire the next generation of artists and community builders to remember their heritage, to embrace it, and to feel comfortable sharing our collective culture with one another that we might build a better world together for the generations yet to come.
