2016 Elgin Chapbook Nominees Recap
Voting for the 2016 Elgin Awards is open until September 15th for active members of the organization. If you're an active member, please email elginpdfs@gmail.com if you have not already received (or have misplaced/lost track of) the invitation to the Dropbox containing the nominated works for you to download for your perusal. You can become an active member of the Science Fiction Poetry Association at www.sfpoetry.com.
The Elgin Awards, named for SFPA founder Suzette Haden Elgin, are presented annually by SFPA for books published in the preceding two years in two categories, Chapbook and Book. Chapbooks must contain 10-39 pages of poetry. Here are summaries of the nominees in the chapbook category.
Be Closer for My Burn • Robin Wyatt Dunn
(Crisis Chronicles Press, 2015)
This is "the first release in Crisis Chronicles Press' new NineSense series of loaded nine poem chapbooks by authors whose work you should know."
The Book of Answers • Herb Kauderer
(Written Image, 2014)
The Book of Answers is full of poems that answer other poems and other poets, some famous, some not, some serious, some not.
The Endless Machine • Max Ingram
(Bone Forge Books, 2015)
Mysteries of space, sex, and time are waiting to be explored; from an ancient alien migration, and sex with a starship, to space-suit wearing angels falling from the stars.
A Guide for the Practical Abductee • E. Kristin Anderson
(Red Bird Chapbooks, 2014)
A short chapbook of poems on the topic of the unknown — cryptozoology, ufology, and paranormal phenomena. From ouija boards to Sasquatch to the Bermuda Triangle and crop circles, these poems explore the nature of humanity from a whole new angle.
Southern Cryptozoology • Allie Marini
(Hyacinth Girl Press, 2015)
This chapbook contains thirteen poems, each an account of a different strange beast. Boxed scientific summaries open each poem, presented as a field guide.
Stairs Appear in a Hole Outside of Town • John Philip Johnson
(Graphic Poetry, 2014)
Graphic Poetry, like little Twilight Zone episodes. Graphic Poetry, like a graphic novel, only poetry. Illustrated by Marvel Comics legend Bob Hall, Nate Hamel, Julian Peters, and more.
Undoing Winter • Shannon Connor Winward
(Finishing Line Press, 2014)
Undoing Winter explores the isolated, and often very cold, landscape of motherhood.
